Wix vs WordPress – Which One is Better? (Pros and Cons)

March 6, 2021

You’ve finally decided to create your website but you’re unsure of which platform to go for? Don’t worry, we are here to help! In this article, we will compare Wix vs WordPress, two of the most popular website platforms in the world. We will go over the pros and cons of each platform in order to help you choose the right tool for your needs. Let’s get started!

1. Ease of use

No need to be a developer to build your website! Both Wix and WordPress offer an easy way to write content, rearrange things, and manage your business or ecommerce website in a code-free environment.
Both platforms are equally easy to use. Wix is targeted more towards beginners whereas WordPress offers more advanced capabilities. WordPress gives you access to thousands of templates that you can customise and offers one of the most intuitive drag and drop page builder plugins on the market. If you are looking to build a robust and highly customisable website with specific features, we would recommend WordPress.

Our verdict: Wix might be a little bit easier to use as it is targeting beginners but if you are looking for more advanced capabilities, we would recommend WordPress.

2. Design and Customisation

Wix offers over 900 pre-made templates to choose from, categorised by industry such as eCommerce, restoration, travelling and more! Wix’s templates are beautiful and easy to customise to fit your needs. That being said, Wix can be a little limiting as its design flexibility is targeted toward beginners. Another disadvantage is that once you select a Wix template, you cannot change it.
WordPress offers thousands of templates to choose from. The possibilities of customisation are endless allowing you to create the website you’ve always dreamed of. In addition, you can change your WordPress template anytime allowing your website to evolve with your business and tastes.

Our verdict: If you want a highly professional and customisable website, we would recommend WordPress.

3. Plugins and Apps

Plugins and Apps are third party extensions you can install on your website to add specific features such as creating a contact form, selling online courses or more. While Wix offers 200 plugins, WordPress offers over 58,000! If you think of a feature you want to add on your website, you can almost be certain that WordPress would offer it.

Our verdict: WordPress beats Wix by far in this area.

4. E-commerce

If you are looking to sell a small amount of items, Wix is a great choice. It comes with an e-commerce template completely built for you as low as $23/month. If you are looking to build a full-blown online store, WordPress is a much stronger platform and offers one of the most popular plugins for ecommerce called WooCommerce.

Our verdict: It depends on your needs! Wix is a great choice for smaller stores while WordPress is the way to go for power and scalability.

5. Cost

It wouldn’t be a comparison without discussing the cost. Wix offers a free plan although we don’t recommend it for two reasons: first, you cannot remove ads from your site, and second you cannot use a custom domain name. Your domain name will be username.wix.com/sitename. Apart from that, Wix offers 8 different paid plans going from $14 to $49 per month. You can pay monthly or choose a yearly plan.
WordPress is free to download and use but you will need to pay for hosting. The cost might increase if you decide to use a premium theme or plugins.

Our verdict: While Wix offers monthly plans, WordPress prices can vary depending on how much resources you want to use.
Overall, if you want a completely free website, WordPress is the way to go.

Final Verdict

As with most things, whether you should use Wix or WordPress depends on your needs and business.
Wix is a great platform if you are just getting started and need something relatively basic. If you need to build a robust professional website for your company, we would recommend without a doubt using WordPress.
